Hi,
Below are the updated that have been received from our architect.
What's new
· New MinRole- Server roles are now streamlined as User, Robot and Caching. SharePoint logic behind multiple services are now consolidated into one single machine thereby reducing no. of discrete roles (Web frontend, Application, Specialized and Caching).
· New Role based installation let you install SharePoint components required for chosen roles
· SAML based authenticaation using OAuth 2.0
· Office graph and delve support. It's also coming to SharePoint 2013 as update
· Durable links - File links will be based on reference id and not url , so no matter where the file is or moved somewhere, the link just works (no more broken links...yaaaayyyy!)
· Fast site creation using SPSite. Copy at Content Database Level
· Cloud search service application - Unified on-premises and cloud index and provides support for Office Graph/Delve. New search as a service reducing crawl footprint
· Real-time Telemetry - New usage data analytics reporting and logging apis
· Migration apis to migrate content from SharePoint 2013.
· Video portal as in O365
· Support of ODF in document libraries
· Site Publishing - Publish internal sites to internet (Extranet) using O365 identity federation services
· Automated hybrid deployment, configuration of pre-requisite and core infrastructure. This mean no need to write 50 pages of powershell!!!
What stays
· Farm solution will continue be supported, however the new app model will see more updates and traction
What's gone
· Standalone installation - You need to have a SQL Server 2014 installed and configured already. Its called Single Server Installation
· Classic authentication
· FIM for user profile within SharePoint farm. It will be now external to SharePoint
What's updated
Now be ready to get surprised and make sure you don't scream,
· Content database can grow up to 1 TB
· 100,000 site collections in single web application
· List threshold limit much higher that 5000. They did not disclose the exact figure, but gonna be much higher...this is real big one developers
· Search index size increased by 2 times to 500 million items
· Improved files performance using BITS protocol
· Patching is totally changed from 2013 with very few MSI and MSP files. In place and online installation are supported
· Improved bi-directional user profile sync by having external FIM
· Project server database is merged with SharePoint content database and not separate anymore
I will end this by a quick summary on system requirements and migration options,
Hardware requirements remains same as of 2013,
16 - 24 GB, 64 bit Quad core processor for single server farm
12 - 16 GB, 64 bit Quad core processor for multi-server farm
In order to migrate to 2016 you have two options,
1. First upgrade 14.5 version to 15 site (2010 mode to 2013). Then use DB Attach Detach to migrate to 2016.
2. Use 3rd party tool or migration api (which is planned) to migrate content.
Happy Share Pointing folks!
